Dr Maponya to be buried on Tuesday

Dr Richard Maponya passed away last week Monday at the age of 99.
The funeral service for businessman Dr Richard Maponya will take place at the University of Johannesburg Soweto Campus from 8 o’clock on Tuesday morning.

Maponya passed away last week Monday at the age of 99.

He will be buried at Johannesburg’s Westpark Cemetery in a special official funeral, Category 2.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the eulogy at the funeral.

Among those expected to pay tribute to the businessman include Zion Christian Church (ZCC) Bishop Barnabas Lekganyane, former Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Maponya’s business associate and friend Dr Sam Motsuenyane.

Maponya was born in Limpopo and started his business career in the 1950s in Soweto, building a business that spanned everything from retail to property development and vehicle dealerships.

He is survived by his 10 children.

Maponya will be buried beside his wife Marina.
