Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed AmaZulu FC 3-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.
Despite the win, Masandawana remained second on the league standings – four points behind the leaders, Kaizer Chiefs, while Usuthu also remained 13th on the log.
Masandawana made their intentions clear when they broke the deadlock just five minutes into the game through Sibusiso Vilakazi.
Influential captain Hlompho Kekana set-up Vilakazi, who made no mistake as he scored with a tap in to make it 1-0 to Sundowns.
Usuthu looked dangerous whenever they pushed forward and they came close to scoring through Siyethemba Sithebe in the 18th minute.
The attacking midfielder watched on in disbelief as Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango made a great save at the near-post.
However, the visitors finished the first-half strongly as AmaZulu keeper Neil Boshoff was forced to make two good saves to deny Tebogo Langerman and Wayne Arendse.
However, the 23-year-old shot-stopper was beaten by Themba Zwane from close range on the stroke of halftime and the score was 2-0 to Sundowns at the interval
Sundowns continued their dominance in the early stages of the second-half as long-range specialist Kekana hit the woodwork with a thunderous effort.
Pitso Mosimane’s men were then awarded a penalty after Tapelo Xoki was adjudged to have fouled one of the scorers, Vilakazi in the box.
Zwane then stepped up and beat Boshoff to make it 3-0 to Sundowns in the 54th minute with the visitors in complete control of the entertaining encounter
AmaZulu coach Jozef Vukusic reacted by introducing Lehlohonolo Majoro as the hosts looked to pull one back just after the hour mark.
However, the defending league champions continued to attack as Vilakazi’s effort missed the target with 15 minutes left on the clock.
Ultimately, Sundowns ran out 3-0 winners over AmaZulu, who were unable to grab a late consolation goal in the closing stages of the match.
