GOVERNMENT CALL FOR WATER RESTRICTIONS

Government Call for water restrictions as dams runs dry in Mopani District of Limpopo including in Giyani. Municipal spokesperson Witness Tiva has confirmed that two significant dams including the Thapane dam and Modjaji dam are dry. The department of water and sanitation said Millions of people are now facing the worse water crisis recorded in years due to a localised draught haunting the area. Department spokesperson Sputnik Ratau said the underground water table is almost depleted.

The Middle Letaba dam one of the largest dams in the province within the Mopani district is at 7.8 % followed by the Nsami dam at 28.4% .Ratau reiterated the call for residents in the water stressed communities to use water sparingly amid skyrocketing temperatures .He said the situation in Mopani is worrying. Meanwhile a multibillion rand project to source water from the Nandoni dam near Thohoyandou has hit a snag .An investigation into the allegations of maladministration is currently underway. Ratau said the department is yet to hear from the Presidency following reports that President Cyril Ramaphosa is to visit on a fact finding mission. The communities including farmers are pinning their hope on the early summer rainfall.
