The Democratic Alliance (DA) is in possession of a petition, being driven by the ‘Merafong City Community and ANC Supporters’ calling for removal or recall of Maphefo Letsie-Mogale as Mayor of Merafong City.
The petition indicates that the ANC wants the Mayor removed because the municipality is failing to fulfil its Constitutional obligations.
The municipality invested R50 million with VBS Mutual Bank, which has now been put under curatorship by the South African Reserve Bank.
Earlier this year, the DA warned that the ANC in Merafong will have to present an unfunded budget. This means that they will have to try and provide services and programmes with money they do not have to spend.
The lack of fiscal management is having a negative impact on the day-to-day running of the municipality and will leave residents in the lurch. This has led to the municipality being unable to pay service providers within 30 days.
The municipality has also been plagued by numerous service delivery issues, like water cuts without prior notice and no proper repairs and maintenance of municipal public facilities, to name a few.
Municipal cleaners are also allegedly buying cleaning detergents and toilet rolls with money from their own pockets.
It is for this very same reason that the ANC now wants to remove the Mayor and have the municipality placed under administration. It is clear that the rot in the ANC has permeated all levels of government, and no municipality has been left unscathed.
The DA in Merafong has tabled a Motion of No Confidence in Mayor Maphefo Letsie-Mogale and we are awaiting this debate.
For far too long, residents of Merafong have been oppressed by poverty and unemployment under the ANC-led government and are in dire need of change. The DA is the only party that can bring that Change through delivering better services for all.
